What’s it like to Ride Dollywood’s Mystery Mine? (Review)
You will definitely see the Mystery Mine ride building as you walk, towering over Timber Canyon. This ride has an amazing queue and excellent story behind it with lots of details in the queue and ride itself. If you pay attention, you will see all the details and how it all goes together. Starting with the vulture outside the ride, before you even enter the queue. It tells stories and warns you of the dangers inside the mine.
As you board the mine car, You will be seated 4 across in 2 rows, for a total of 8 riders per train. There are 7 trains with a single car. After you board, buckle up with an over the shoulder restraint and everyone gets checked for safety, you are off on this mining adventure!. You will notice the attention to detail in the ride’s theming, even before it starts. The dark tunnels, creepy sounds, and realistic props take you into a mining expedition gone wrong. It’s an immersive experience that sets Mystery Mine apart from the other coasters at Dollywood.
As the ride starts, there is a mini drop. You slowly drop into the mine and it gets dark for a little bit, but the anticipation builds! ( this coaster has dark ride portions that are inside, and some are outside. ) The mine car will stop for a few seconds and then you begin the climb up, as it takes you outside. You drop and go through twists and turns before you head back inside the mine, but it’s not over yet!.
Without giving too much away, I can tell you to prepare for drops, sudden changes in direction, spirals, inversions, fire and even a thrilling 95 degree vertical drop! As you drop, it feels like your stomach is left behind. Its a great, fun indoor, outdoor roller coaster and my kiddo and I enjoyed it very much.
What is Mystery Mine based on at Dollywood?
The Mystery Mine ride is themed after traditional mine superstitions, each lift and drop in the ride is related to one of these bad omens. There are 3 great superstitions related to mines; Never take your boots off in a mine because It’s bad luck, Don’t whistle in a mine because this can bring danger and Birds in a mine are bad luck. You can find these through the ride like vultures and ravens, a canary dropping dead in its cage, and even the boots hanging.
